The Civil Service Commission of Ironton, Ohio will be conducting an examination to establish an eligibility list for entry level Firefighters. Applications can be picked up at the Ironton Fire Department at 526 S. 4th Street – Ironton Mayor’s Office, 301 South 3rd Street or online at https://irontonohio.org
REQUIREMENTS:
- High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
- U.S. Citizen (Copy of Birth Cert) or receiving citizen instruction
- Must be physically fit to perform duties
- Must present a valid driver’s license
- Applicant must be between 18 and 40 years of age to apply

FIREFIGHTER AGILITY TEST
- ALL CANDIDATES WILL HAVE SHORTS, LONG PANTS OR SWEATS, AND FULLY ENCLOSED SHOES. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WILL ISSUE A CHIN STRAP HELMET, AIR. PACK SIMULATOR AND GLOVES.
- THE CANDIDATE WILL LIFT A 2.5-INCH HOSE BUNDLE AND SHOULDER IT. PROCEED TO THE THIRD FLOOR LEVEL OF THE TRAINING TOWER. THEY ARE NOT PERMITTED TO RUN AND MUST TOUCH EACH STEP WITH THEIR FOOT. AT THE ORANGE CONE ON THE THIRD FLOOR OF THE TOWER, THEY WILL PUT THE HOSE BUNDLE ON THE DECK AND PULL A ROPE WITH A WEIGHT ATTACHED UP THROUGH THE TOWER. WHEN THE WEIGHT IS SAFELY ON THE DECK OF THE TOWER, THEY WILL RE-SHOULDER THE 2.5-INCH HOSE AND RETURN TO THE STARTING SPOT AT THE BOTTOM OF THE TOWER.
- THERE WILL BE A SHORT WALK FOR REST TO THE NEXT EVENT.
- THE CANDIDATE WILL SHOULDER, AND 1¾ INCH CHARGED HOSE LINE AND DRAG IT 100 FT. THE CANDIDATE WILL THEN USE A HOSE STRAP TO DRAG THE HOSE BACK TO A CONE 25 FEET PAST THE STARTING POINT. THEN THEY WILL PLACE THE NOZZLE ON THE GROUND.
- THERE WILL BE A SHORT WALK FOR REST TO THE NEXT EVENT.
- THE CANDIDATE WILL LIFT TWO FIRE EXTINGUISHERS, 0NE IN EACH HAND, AND CARRY BOTH 100 FT. THEN, THEY WILL SET THE EXTINGUISHERS DOWN, TURN AROUND, PICK THEM BACK UP, AND WALK BACK TO THE STARTING POINT.
- THERE WILL BE A SHORT WALK FOR REST TO THE NEXT EVENT.
- THE CANDIDATE WILL PICK UP A ROOF LADDER BY THE TOP RUNG, PUSH THE BASE AGAINST A WALL, AND RAISE THE LADDER BY WALKING FORWARD, PUSHING THE LADDER UP RUNG BY RUNG. ALL RUNGS WILL BE TOUCHED TILL THE LADDER IS FLAT AGAINST THE WALL.
- THERE WILL BE A SHORT WALK FOR REST TO THE NEXT EVENT.
- THE CANDIDATE WILL DRAG A RESCUE DUMMY 50 FEET
- THE CANDIDATE WILL USE PROPER LIFTING PROCEDURES AND FOLLOW DIRECTIONS.
- RUNNING IS NOT PERMITTED. FAILURE TO TOUCH STEPS OR LADDER RUNGS = FAILURE.
- DROPPING EQUIPMENT AND LOSS OF CONTROL = FAILURE.
- THE CANDIDATE MUST COMPLETE THE EVENT IN 10 MINUTES OR THE CANDIDATE FAILS THE EVENT.
- ONE SHORT PAUSE IN THE MOVEMENT OF THE CANDIDATE IS PERMITTED, FOR REST, IT IS LIMITED TO 20 SECONDS AND WILL BE ADDED TO THEIR TIME.
- ANY ADDITIONAL STOP IN THE TESTING PROCESS WILL BE CONSIDERED A FAILURE TO COMPLETE.
IF YOU BECOME AN EMPLOYEE
YOU WILL SERVE ONE YEAR PROBATION WITH THE CITY OF IRONTON FIRE DEPARTMENT.
WITHIN THAT YEAR, YOU MUST RECEIVE A CERTIFICATION OF FIRE TRAINING TO FIREFIGHTER I & II, OR YOU WILL TERMINATE YOUR EMPLOYMENT.
TRAINING IS PROVIDED, BUT YOU MUST MEET THE 4765-20-02 QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS.
